1967-1968 Camaro Gas Tank Install from GasTanks.com

We are pleased to present the following detailed installation instructions for a GM32A gas tank. This tank is appropriate for a 1967-1968 Chevrolet Camaro. GasTanks.com GM32-B is a tank with the same body but a different neck and is applicable to a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. Installation of that tank is very similar.

Removal

Step 1. Disconnect the battery. Disconnect fuel line and completely drain old gas tank and fuel line to a fuel container. Assure that this is done in a well ventilated area with no open flames or ignition sources present.

Step 2. Disconnect filler neck from behind license plate mount.

Step 3. Unbolt rear strap mounts and drop tank, sliding it out the rear of the car. Remove and discard old straps

Step 4. If new fuel line is needed, replace it now with a Quanta Products GasTanks.com steel or stainless steel fuel line available in the Fuel Lines section of this site.

Installation

Step 1. GasTanks.com's tanks for classic cars are wrapped in foam, stretched-wrapped and boxed to protect the product during shipment. Remove the tank from the box and unwrap it.

Step 2. Apply weatherstrip cement to the tank. We recommend 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive 08001 (yellow) or 08008 (black). Apply the antisqueak strips to the tank and press in place.

Step 3. Each Quanta Products GasTanks.com tank comes with a rubber sending unit o-ring (20-13). To make installation easier soak the o-ring in or rub on a bit of clean motor oil. Place the o-ring in the sending unit hole. Insert GasTanks.com sending unit into hole with fuel line to front passenger side corner of the tank.

Insert the retaining cam (lock ring), part 20-14, which comes with each Quanta Products GasTanks.com tank, into the retaining groove. Use the retaining cam (lock ring) tool (20-LRW), pressing down and turning the lock ring.

Step 4. The sending unit wire is then stretched across the top of the tank and secured in place with a wide piece of black tape to assure it does not get pinched during installation resulting in chafing of the wire.

Step 5. Prebent straps are made to exactly fit the strap groove in the tank. Straps are available in plated steel part number ST-56 or in Stainless Steel part number SSST-56. The proper bolt kit for this installation is Quanta Products GasTanks.com part number STB-1.

Insert the new strap from GasTanks.com hooked-end first into the slot in the floor-pan behind the rear axle. Insert the sheet metal screws from bolt kit STB-1 through the rear holes to retain the straps. (see closeup in subsequent photos).

Lift the tank into place as shown taking care not to pinch the sending unit wire.

Step 6. Pull the strap up into place and insert the retaining bolts. Secure with nuts provided in Quanta Products kit STB-1.

Step 7. Your GasTanks.com tank is now in place awaiting attachment of the filler tube through the trunk floor to the stub neck behind the license plate access.

Step 7. Your new sending unit fuel line will line up with your new front to rear fuel line. Utilizing one of Quanta Products GasTanks.com fuel hose kits connect the two tubes utilizing the rubber hose and two spring clamps. A suggested kit is 20-35B.
